Akbar N Sura appears an ordinary man. But he does extra-ordinary things – especially with crystal glasses. His company, Crystal Gallery is the largest producer and supplier of crystal products. No celebrations, corporate or awards ceremony is complete without Crystal Gallery being part of it. Most award-winners in the GCC would have his hand-crafted products on their shelves.
Crystal Gallery, was established in 1975 in India and expanded to the UAE in 1992. It is today the largest producer of crystal glass objects, decorative, gift items and artefacts in the Middle East. Spread across
a 60,000 square feet factory in Ras Al Khor, the company employs 230 professional crystal glass craftsmen. It has a network of eight showrooms in the UAE. Crystal Gallery’s journey began much before its establishment in the Middle East; within the Sura family in Mumbai, India, where Akbar Sura was born in a large joint family. And although crystal might have existed long before the magic touch of the Sura family, they seem to have perfected it to the ultimate beauty.
The company has helped the Gulf’s thriving events management, awards ceremony and gala events to grow in a faster and more dignified way and has been a part of all major awards programme, namely Dubai Quality Awards, Government Excellence Awards.
The company is currently in the process of getting the Guinness World Record of creating the largest crystal replica of the Burj Khalifa – at 3.5 metres high – and the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi.
The company’s distinguished awards have also been presented to the Ruling/Royal families of the GCC as well as the governments.

Akbar N Sura was born in Mumbai, India, on March 2nd, 1949. His was a joint family of 45 members living in a large courtyardtype dwelling – with a single kitchen where food was cooked for all.
“Our family had a crystal-cutting workshop and showroom in Mumbai which was the main source of our livelihood,” Akbar recalls.
“In those days, we did not have enough crystal craftsmen in India. So, initially it was very difficult to create shapes. We had to travel to Czechoslovakia to get trained with professionals and then transferred the
knowhow to others.”
“Crystal cutting requires the same level of expertise and precision needed for diamond cutting and polishing. Each surface of the crystal object has to be cut with the ultimate finesse, sparkle, whiteness and smoothness,” added Sura.
In those days, crystal cutting was cheap in India compared to the western countries. So, business in India started to flourish due to more cost effective place to source fine crystalware.
“Since India was placed favourably in price and quality of craftsmanship, we could offer better products at a much cheaper price. As a result, business started to come to us,” Akbar says.
“It was at that time the demand for highquality crystalware started to increase. So, our business also grew as we then started to invest in our capacity. It is at that stage of the business that we started to travel to meet European suppliers of crystal glassware more frequently as the business was expanding.”
While travelling to Europe, Akbar used to make frequent stopovers in Dubai and after a few rounds into the city he felt that opening a branch in the UAE could be a good idea. Firstly, it would help the company expand business in Dubai — the centre of the new Middle East — and secondly, it will aid the company in managing logistics between India and Europe better. Additionally, the liberal trade and investment environment of Dubai provided the ideal window for the Sura family to manage its India operations better.
“So in 1992, we set up our operations in Dubai with a small footprint initially to test the market,” Akbar recalls. “However, once we were on the ground, we found a very solid market potential for our products while at the same time Dubai’s geographical location between the East and West, provided
the best logistics solution for an India-based company doing business with European countries.
“We quickly established a small crystalcutting factory in Al Aweer where we still have our base operations and even a large showroom. We used to live upstairs while our factory was on the ground floor at the back of the showroom. As business grew, we also expanded our showroom and the factory.
“About 90 per cent of what we sell is made by us — in our factory,” he says. “Our products in no way lacked quality. In fact, they were superior in many aspects including quality of cutting and polishing, and design, while we offered them at a much cheaper price. So, we did not want to compromise on any of that.”
Akbar Sura has been recognised for his contribution to the industry a number of time, including the Burj CEO Awards 2016 for the Best Crystal Company in the World, held in Washington DC in July 2016, Asian Leadership Awards, Forbes list of the Top Indian Leaders in the Arab World. Being a former Rotarian, he is also a member of the Indian Business and Professionals Council (IBPC), Indian Merchant’s Chamber, Indo-American Society in India.

The highly anticipated WETEX (Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition) 2016 opened its doors to the public on 4th October and successfully ran for 3 days until 6th October, 2016. Among the interesting stalls and heavy machinery present at the site was the Crystal Gallery Exhibit that captured the interest of all attendees. Deemed as a 'last-over thriller', the final match in the Challengers Cup Bronze Section @ ICC Academy was indeed a very close one with IM Galadari just managing a win. Crystal Gallery batted first and managed to score 43. However, things seemed to turn around as the Crystal Gallery boys gave it their all and nearly pulled off a miracle. The player of the match - Nabeel picked up 2 wickets in the final over which had Hasan of IM Galadari surviving the final 2 balls to ensure his team's victory. Indeed a close, exhilarating finish to this final match. Another reason for Crystal Gallery to cheer was its MVP Zafar who was awarded the Player of the Tournament in the Bronze section.

Crystal Gallery has done it again. Its merry band of boys has once again proved their prowess on the cricket field by scoring an impressive 91 runs against Edgen Murray before restricting its opponents to a total of minus 16 in reply for a 107-run win. Drawn in Pool A of the Bronze section of the tournament, Crystal Gallery impressed in every respect, losing just two wickets during the course of its innings before taking 15 Edgen Murray in reply. Zafar was named the player of the match after the bowler secured the truly remarkable figures of six wickets for minus 24 runs.

Xerox Corporate Golf Challenge QF3 Winners Revealed
The Xerox Corporate Golf Challenge's third qualifying round took place at the Doha Golf Club, Qatar on 10th May, 2014. An impressive number of 62 teams participated in the event. The winners of the QF3 were Team Exon Mobil Qatar - Naynesh Desai and Douglas Grote with their score of 63. The second and third places went to Team Golfnuts - Tim Miller and Neil Flanigan - and Team Apollo Engineering 1 - Frank Harrigan and Alan Crozier, respectively. They scored 64 (countback) and 64 (net), individually. Team Exon Mobil Qatar, along with the GGA team and Team Sabre Travel Network - the winners of the first and second qualifying rounds, respectively is set to participate in the 36-hole 2-day grand final which is scheduled to take place in December 2014. This prestigious event will be held at the Tower Links and Al Hamra golf courses, with an overnight stay at the Waldorf Astoria, Ras Al Khaimah, UAE. Educational Trip
On 28th August 2012, a group of over 45 students from different schools in Dubai visited Crystal Gallery for an educational trip. Mashreq Bank tied up with Crystal Gallery in its initiative to promote Corporate Social Responsibility. The participants were educated with knowledge about LASER and one of its applications, the Sub-surface Laser Engraving, which is a process of engraving an image in a transparent solid material by focusing a laser below the surface to create small fractures, and is pioneered by Crystal Gallery in the Middle East since 2002, by demonstrating how a piece of crystal block is engraved with a 3D image in its sub-surface. The children are tomorrow's hope. By stimulating their minds with today's technology would help them become future leaders, businessmen, engineers, scientists, etc. who will run the world in future.

Ambassador Golf Cup launch
Crystal Gallery is a proud sponsor of the Ambassadors Golf Cup for both years 2011 and 2012. It is an inter- business council event including the Indian, South African, Australian, British, German, Irish and of course the UAE National Team. This year the organizers are looking at increasing the participation from 7 Business Council Teams to 10 teams.
